Wednesday 11 August kicks off our programme of free evening talks - part of McTaggart's Children: A Cenenary Celebration at Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery (until 3 October 2010).

Neil Stewart, Honoray President of the Bonyrigg and Lasswade Local History Society, is giving the first talk: William McTaggart and his Family. The Society is the custodian of many McTaggart family photographs, documents and sketchbooks which illustrate the artist's family life which is so important in explaining his artistic life.

Children feature in so many of McTaggart's paintings and his talk gives a real insight into the artist's love of family life. He grew up in a large family and remained close to his brothers, sisters and parents long after leaving home. He went on to have 15 children of his own! One of his friends commented that his home was a peculiarly happy one - "being an easy person to live with, his family relationships were marked by warmth and trenderness".

Look out for two other free talks: Wednesday 25 August - Children in Art by Paul Harris (co-author of Dictionary of Scottish Art) and Wednesday 8 September - Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery's Fine Art Collection by Dallas Mechan, former Curator of the Museum.
