£150,000 of funding has been earmarked for a number of Dunfermline businesses to allow traditional shop fronts to be reinstated and restore the historic character of Dunfermline town centre.

Planning applications have now been submitted to Fife Council for the works which include repainting and repairing windows, restoring stonework and fixing roofs. 90% of the cost is to be funded through the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).

Applications submitted include Thomas Johnston Butchers and the building next to it, the upper floor above First Choice, Campbells the Jewellers, Cutters, Spex in the City, Pink String and Sealing Wax and Dunfermline Trophy Engraving Centre.

Lorraine Bell, Dunfermline CARS Officer, said: “We have targeted specific buildings because they are good examples of traditional shops that maybe need a bit of TLC and the owners need some help to provide that. We’ve done our research and looked at old photos and planning applications from 100 years ago to see what these buildings were like then. Hopefully in a few months time, we can help bring back some of that character, make Dunfermline town centre more attractive and encourage people to stay longer and spend their money there.”

The project is one of a programme of improvements being funded through the £1.8 million Dunfermline Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), which is a partnership between Fife Council and Historic Scotland.  If the applications are successful, work will begin on some shops before Christmas – and be completed in Spring 2011.

CARS is being delivered over five years and funding will be used in four key areas, to:

  • Provide grants to renovate historic buildings
  • Provide grants to businesses to improve their shop fronts
  • Carry out improvements to wynds and closes
  • Provide information and training for the repair and care of traditional buildings
