A photographic competition, organised by geoHeritage Fife and sponsored by Fife Council, aims to capture images of the varied forms, colours, textures and contrasts of the rocks of Fife. Cash prizes of £100, £75 and £50 will be awarded for the top three images. These, and 17 runners-up photographs will be framed for public display around Fife.

Submission deadline: 31 October 2010.

geoHeritage Fife is a registered charity consisting of a group of professional and amateur geologists  whose aims are  to promote the rich local geological heritage and to encourage geotourism in Fife,  an area which includes the extinct remains of  volcanoes which, with their associated volcanic sills, help form the Lomond Hills. Ice Age valleys contain glacial gravels running West to East, the table land of the Cleish Hills  host dolerite (whinstone) quarries,  Carboniferous sandstone and fossil-rich limestone  form much of the coastal cliffs, and not least, Fife has an  historic  legacy of coal mining.

The aim of this photographic competition is to capture photographically the varied forms, colours, textures and contrasts of the rich variety of rocks which Fife has to offer. This does not include landscapes, but rather  images of the rocks in their various shapes and forms.   The competition invites members of the public to submit photographic images which fit the general theme of art as seen in rock formations of Fife. Each person may submit up to three A4 prints, in either colour or black-and-white. After the deadline of 31 October 2010, geoHeritage Fife will organise a public event at which a professional photographer will judge the submissions with the aim of selecting the best 3 images, and 17 runners-up. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.  All twenty selected images will be printed professionally at A4 size and framed. A scientific description of each image will be provided by professional geologists in order to offer an explanation of the features for the general public. This collection will be put on public display in rotation around Fife for a period of time  in suitable public locations.
