POLICE IN Fife were surprised to discover that the owner of an item of found property handed in during the British Open at St Andrews was in fact the property of the father of golf legend Sir Nick Faldo.
On Tuesday (13th July) the watch was found in the area of the tented village by Motherwell man Gordon Campbell, a keen golfer who plays off a handicap of four, and was accompanied by his wife Angela. They realised that the watch was valuable and appeared to have sentimental value to the owner, so handed it to police at the tented village where it was lodged as found property.
Later that day, Sir Nick Faldo made enquiries with police to find out whether the watch lost by his 84yr old father George had been found. Much to his delight he was told the watch had indeed been handed in. The watch had been a gift to George to celebrate his 80th birthday from Nick and his four children, Natalie, Matthew, Georgia and Emma.
Speaking to police Gordon Campbell said: “It was obvious when I found the watch that it would hold great sentimental value to the owner. I am really glad I have helped reunite Mr Faldo with his watch. You can imagine how amazed I was when police told me that it belonged to the father of Sir Nick Faldo.”
Talking about the recovery of the watch Sir Nick said: “I am absolutely delighted that it was found and we feel very fortunate that it was handed in to the police. It has been great to be able to thank Mr Campbell personally for his act of courtesy in handing the watch to police.”
