SC GREGOR LOW AND CHIEF SUPT TOM EWING

Special Constable Gregor Low, based at Kirkcaldy was yesterday (Thursday 22nd July) commended for outstanding achievement by Chief Supt Tom Ewing head of Communities Policing Division.

During the late evening of Saturday 3rd July, 2010 an elderly man, suffering from dementia, was reported missing in the Kirkcaldy area.

In an attempt to trace the man, a number of officers deployed into the area including Special Constable Gregor Low, who, despite having already completed an 8 hour tour of duty selflessly agreed to remain on duty to assist his colleagues in carrying out an extensive street search.

About 4.30am on Sunday 4th July, SC Low was searching in the Auchtertool area when he observed an object in open ground some distance away. SC Low made his way to the area and discovered the missing man lying face down, in an extremely distressed state and requiring immediate medical assistance.

SC Low rendered assistance and comforted the male until an ambulance attended. The man was subsequently removed to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy where, thankfully, it was established that he was not suffering from any adverse effects as a result of his ordeal.

SC Low's actions have been recognised as exemplary in this instance and he has been awarded a Chief Superintendent's Commendation as a result.

Chief Superintendent Ewing said: “ The officers of the Special Constabulary regularly work alongside regular police officers and play a vital role in providing operational policing to the communities of Fife. The involvement of SC Low in this matter reinforces the high standards that members of the special constabulary set themselves and which is evident week in and week out. On this particular occasion SC Low carried out his duties in a professional and selfless manner and he should be justly proud of his actions on the night in question.”

Fife Constabulary's Special Constable's Coordinator Helen Lindsay said: " SC Low joined the force only 9 months ago and is already showing himself to be an outstanding officer.

“We are currently recruiting Special Constables in Fife. The essential entry criteria is to pass a standard entrance test, details of which can be found on the Fife Police Website on www.fife.police.uk.

“Applicants must be of good character, enthusiastic, committed to engaging with the local community and be able to commit to training at Police HQ one night a week and one day at the weekend for 8 weeks.

“The Special Constabulary is changing. No longer is it seen as a tool to aid Fife in times of emergency with many of the 136 strong Special Constabulary out on patrol every weekend and throughout the week. For more information call Linda Davidson in Police Recruitment on 01592 418842. "
