Hands

If you look after and support a friend, relative or neighbour who could not manage without your help then you are a carer. If you are a carer, you are not alone. Three in five people in the UK will become carers at some point in their lives.

There is a range of help and support available to you as a carer. It can include financial support or getting a little help so you can take some time off from being a carer. There is a range of financial benefits available to you and also to the person you care for. Do not be afraid to ask for help and claim what you are entitled to.

Before we can offer you help we need to talk to you. This carer's assessment is about us hearing what your needs as a carer. Examples of the ways we can help may include help with housework or making simple changes to your home.

The Fife Carers Centre, based in Kircaldy, can help. Often carers don’t recognise themselves as being a carer – they might need someone else to point it out for them. They see themselves as just getting on with things and doing what needs to be done. If this sounds like you or someone you know Fife Carers Centre can offer practical help and support. Contact them on01592 642999.

Looking after yourself as a carer is really important. Caring for someone can be physically and emotionally demanding. Speak to your doctor (GP) about any concerns you have over your own health. Your doctor can advise you on keeping healthy, including eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep.

Your doctor should also be able to give you information about counselling, social services and organisations for carers.

Many employers offer help to carers. For example, it is in your employer's best interest to consider flexible working patterns to help you combine working and caring. If you are unable to work because you are caring for someone, you can still get credited with National Insurance contributions. If you are entitled to Carer's Allowance, you will be credited automatically.

DirectGov's website caring for a relative has some really useful information especially about benefits, pensions and financial advice.
